Poor towns to get new free zones

In an effort to stem migration from small towns to the big cities, the government plans to build 30 new industrial complexes, each valued at RD$4 million. Listin Diario reports they will be built in poor communities throughout the country and will enjoy the same benefits and incentives as the industrial free zones. The Dominican Association of Free Zones (Adozona) is hoping to motivate business owners, mainly from the US, to invest in these enterprises.  The goal is to bring national or international industries to towns with depressed economies and few or no sources of employment. If the businesses comply with commitments to hire a certain number of workers from the region, they pay no rent on the property.  Jos? Clase, the president of Adozona, says ?The benefits will be to bring a source of jobs to these towns and put the brakes on the migration of young people to Santo Domingo and Santiago.?
