Mejía and Fernández renew “old friendship”

In a gesture meant to “keep the country unified”, President Hipólito Mejía and ex- president Leonel Fernández decided to renew their “old friendship” and work together for the approval of various legislative iniciatives, among them the Financial and Monetary Code. The two met yesterday over lunch at the ex-president’s home. Hoy newspaper reports that Fernández pointed out the importance of unity in the DR “in the face of the events we’re witnessing,” an allusion to the attacks taking place in Afghanistan. Amidst smiles and hand shaking, Mejía admitted that in the past there were some problems in his relationship with the ex-president. “But I am convinced that Leonel and the PLD represent Dominican democracy.”
