The National Police have delivered a document to the Chamber of Deputies which states their opposition to several points in the proposed Police Reform Bill, specifically the elimination of police trials and an end to police ranks. Yesterday, the President of the Chamber, Rafaela Alburquerque, dissolved the original committee that studied the police reform bill and formed another committee which will again study the bill in light of the new police report. The head of this new committee will be PRD deputy for Puerto Plata, César Emilio Peralta Vélez. The police report will be read in todays session of the chamber. Spokesmen for the PRD, PLD and PRSC deputies are still asserting that the bill to modernize the police force should be passed into law. We are seeking to approve this bill in the house today (Wednesday) because police reform is a necessity at this time in the life of the Dominican Republic, affirmed PRD spokesman Alfred Pacheco.
