Las Aguilas Cibaeñas are the team to beat as the winter baseball season gets under way this evening. The Aguilas have won the tournament six of the last ten times. They are national and Caribbean champions and this season their goal is to win the Dominican crown for the 17th time. The Tigres of Licey are their close competition, also with 16 Dominican titles. The Escogido Leones have taken 12, the Estrellas Orientales of San Pedro de Macorís two, the Azucareros of La Romana only one and the newest team, the Pollos Nacionales, are looking to notch their first. All three inaugural games will get under way at 8 pm tonight. President Mejía will throw the opening pitch at Quisqueya Stadium where Licey takes on Escogido. In Santiago, the Pollos confront the Aguilas and in La Romana, the Azucareros play the San Pedro Estrellas.
