Financial problems at the National Post Office (Inposdom) and a lack of public confidence in the institution are threatening its daily operations, according to a report in El Siglo. Its been about two months since Inposdom received its budget allowance from the government. This has prevented it from paying its employees. El Siglo says every check paid to staff in the last two months has bounced like a ping pong ball. Another problem is the millions of pesos owed by the post office to American Airlines, Iberia, Pan Am and others for carrying the mail to and from the DR. The paper says no reason has been given why the National Budget Office is withholding funds from the post office, but the postal authorities affirm they are taking action to resolve the financial crunch. Inposdom spokesman Eddy Cruz says the institution receives RD$2.9 million a month but needs RD$9 million to function properly. We are operating at a deficit of RD$6 million every month and that affects how we function, but we have to adapt to the resources we have, he said.
