An infectious disease specialist has called on Dominicans not to be alarmed about the growing number of anthrax cases in the US. Julio Demorizi told Listín Diario that the chance of this disease arriving in the DR is remote and he feels the health authorities here are creating unnecessary panic. Demorizi points out that an anthrax epidemic could only occur as a result of a bioterrorism attack which is unlikely to happen since this country is not at war with anyone. He reminds people that the only other way the disease can be contracted is by direct contact with animal tissue that contains the bacteria it cannot be spread from person to person.
