Doctors and mediators meet for seven hours

A seven hour meeting yesterday between the Dominican Medical Association (AMD) and a government mediation committee failed to produce a concrete solution to doctors’ complaints. However, both sides are optimistic that the dialogue will help prevent further protests. The coordinator of the mediation team, Cesar Mella Mejías, said most of the points raised by the doctors are “reasonable.” Few details of yesterday’s meeting were released but spokesmen told Listín Diario that the talks went well and within a few days they expect to announce “an agreement that will benefit doctors, the health sector and the public in general.” Mediation talks continue today and the doctors union is expected to announce later today whether it will go ahead with a planned general strike at all hospitals in the country tomorrow.
