It appears that the much-delayed police reform bill will finally get its day in Congress. After a three hour meeting yesterday among the representatives of all the political parties, the committee studying the bill and the President of the Chamber, it was agreed that the controversial bill would be placed on todays agenda. Listín Diario reports that the meeting served to iron out some of the differences among the parties. One participant said there were some heated discussions but the meeting ended well. Isabel Bonilla, the spokesperson for the PLD Deputies said, I think we had a positive meeting, refreshing, harmonious, where everyone said what they had to say. We all won and the Chamber of Deputies has been strengthened as an institution. The most controversial aspects of the bill are the proposal to abolish police court trials and to eliminate ranks within the police department, a move firmly opposed by police.
