Sugar business revitalized

Listín Diario reports that sugar consortium Pringamosa has revived the sugar industry in the Eastern region of the country, boosting an economy that supports thousands of workers. The new energy in the sugar industry began with the privatization of state enterprises under the previous government and since then more than 7000 people have found work in the Porvenir, Consuelo, Santa Fe, Boca Chica and Central Pringamosa sugar factories. Nicolás Casasnovas, president of the group, says they’ve invested RD$145 million in repairs to machines and the physical plant at Consuelo and they have begun repairs to Central Quisqueya which he says will be ready for next spring’s sugar harvest. Casasnovas added that US$5.5 million has been invested in the Boca Chica plant to ensure sugar can be processed there this December. As well, RD$250 million has gone to rehabilitate the Porvenir plant in San Pedro de Macorís. Listín Diario reports the Pringamosa group has the financial backing of Baninter which contributed RD$700 million towards plant rehabilitation.
