Cameras to prevent extortion in airports

El Caribe reports that the Customs Office (DGA) plans to install closed circuit video cameras in luggage inspection areas of all airports in the country to keep an eye on customs officers who may try to extort “tolls” from travelers. It was recently revealed in the media that some people were being charged up to US$40 by customs employees to get their luggage back. The subdirector of Customs Operations, Alexis Henríquez Núñez, says that when they receive complaints of this kind and can prove them, the employee in question is fired. Núñez assures users of Dominican airports that the administration will not tolerate violations. (25 October 2001)
