Fuel shortage at OMSA

Hoy newspaper reports that OMSA bus service has again been affected by mounting debts. Reportedly, OMSA owes RD$260 million to its fuel suppliers and according to the newspaper, since July 2002, OMSA has more than doubled its debt with suppliers, despite the government having authorized an extraordinary subsidy of RD$20 million a month. 
Last 21 July 2002, the public bus service had to be curtailed when the director of the division said that they had accumulated a debt of RD$120 million with fuel suppliers. 
The director of the organization, Diogenes Castillo, is a former president of the Fenatrado trucker?s union known to have used violence to force businesses to use their services for transporting goods from ports. Earlier news reports have questioned his management, including hiring and purchasing practices.
