The Superintendence of Power obliged power distributors to credit consumers with RD$22.5 million for last year. The 7,560 consumers who underwent the often torturous process of filing a claim received the credits from the company to make up for the excess billings in 2002. The Superintendence determined that the consumers were in the right in 54.35 percent of the 13,909 claims placed. The Protecom offices of the Superintendence began receiving the claims from the disgruntled customers after the power distributors refused to accept complaints placed by consumers in their own offices. The credits benefited consumers living in Santo Domingo, San Cristobal, Higuey and Puerto Plata. Of the claims made in 2002, 2,587 cases were decided in favor of the companies. Protecom is still investigating 3,762 alleged incidents of billing errors in 2002.
In 2001, the Superintendence of Power had ordered credits for RD$60 million.
