New York City Columbia University professor, Dr. Roberto Valenzuela, and his colleague Dominican urologist, Dr. Abel Gonzalez, will be participating in a national education campaign on impotence. The physicians hope to raise awareness of the causes and treatments of impotence and help open dialogue between Dominican men and women to overcome this prevalent but highly treatable condition. The campaign is designed to help dispel many of the myths that still prevail today, such as that impotence is an inevitable consequence of aging.
At one time it was felt that psychological causes played the most important role, but medical researchers have come to realize that those are actually in a significant minority. Among the major causes of impotence today are diabetes and hypertension ? diseases prevalent in the Dominican community. Unfortunately, erectile dysfunction is a problem that is frequently associated with a feeling of inadequacy and hopelessness, but one that in most cases can be overcome.
The ?Overcoming Impotence? campaign is being sponsored by Mentor Corporation, a leading global medical device company that addresses a wide variety of health-related needs. The company is funding an information line for people interested in speaking to a urologist. The number is 809 430-PENE (430-7363).
