The municipal council of the city of Santo Domingo has announced that by the end of the month, George Washington Avenue, popularly known as the Malecon, will become a pedestrian walkway from the Obelisk, near Francisco J. Peynado Street, until Maximo Gomez Avenue. This stretch of roadway includes many restaurants, bars and fast-food establishments as well as three of the major hotels along the waterfront. A meeting will be held today with representatives of Asonahores (the National Hotel and Restaurant Association) and the municipal council.
