The Senate of the National Congress has asked civilian organizations and the Catholic Church to present formal proposals of names of possible new judges for the restructured Central Electoral Board (JCE). In order to reshape the JCE, a move that will divide the electoral board into two circuits and increase the number of judges from seven to nine, the Senate needs to know who the potential candidates could be.
Listin Diario reports that the names of Ramon Antonio Veras (Negro), and Manuel Berges (son of a former president of the Supreme Court of Justice) were being mentioned in the Senate yesterday.
Public hearings are to open tomorrow and will be held again on 21 January. Yesterday, President Mejia held meetings with leaders of the opposition PLD party. Attending the meeting were Monsignor Agripino Nu?ez Collado who chaired the National Dialogue, and Minister for the Presidency Sergio Grullon, who is also the brother-in-law of President Mejia.
