Francisco del Rosario Sanchez area staged a demonstration in Santiago. They marched through the city, depositing their electric meters on the steps of the offices of Edenorte to show their dismay at the high electric bills they are receiving. The people delivered their electric meters on motorcycles, on foot and in cars and pickup trucks. Juana Fernandez, a single mother of three who earns RD$1,200 a month as a maid, displayed to reporters a recent electric bill for RD$6,000. Executives of Edenorte say that they are holding ongoing talks with community leaders to establish a fair electric rate for the impoverished sector. Both Hoy and El Caribe newspapers carried this story in their first sections.
