New chief of post office appointed

President Hipolito Mejia has appointed Luis Ernesto Camilo, head of the passport agency, to director of the Postal Department (Inposdom). Governmental postal office service was consistently heralded as a beacon of efficiency during the final years of the Balaguer administration and during the subsequent Fernandez government as well. Since the inception of the Mejia government, however, the service has deteriorated, despite the appointment of three different administrators, including the recently removed Miguel Tineo. To explain the problems at the postal department, Mejia now says that he received the department with a RD$200 million debt.
Mejia appointed Elias Wessin Chavez to take over as head of the governmental passport department. He also appointed TV producer Rafael Corporan de los Santos, minister sans portfolio, to replace Luis Victoria as Dominican consul in Philadelphia.
