The Cogentrix affair

President Hipolito Mejia said that the government will continue to insist that the Compa?ia Electrica de San Pedro de Macoris, operator of the Cogentrix power plant, sit down to renegotiation talks prior to its meeting a US$39-million debt for the initial months of operation. The company maintains that it will not open talks until the government pays the debt. The plant is currently shut down because the terms of the contract, signed during the Fernandez government and approved by Congress, make it less costly for the state than to have it operating.
