After announcing a week ago that the government would turn off air conditioners and unnecessary lights in governmental institutions on weekends due to the high costs and lack of supply of fuels worldwide, President Hipolito Mejia announced yesterday further measures to economize fuels. The President explained that he will reduce the amount of SUVs that accompany his own SUV, especially when traveling around the country. The press has criticized the custom of Mejia?s cabinet members tailing the President, who constantly is on the road.
The most significant new measures are:
1. Ministries of the government will reduce their power bills in the next three months by 7 percent.
2. The National Commission of Energy will inspect all government institutions to recommend alternatives to reduce power bills.
3. All air conditioners will be turned on at or after 9 am and turned off at 4 pm until 21 March.
4. Special incentives will be given to people who use low-consumption light bulbs in their homes.
