The political committee of the Partido de la Liberacion Dominicana (PLD) announced that its primaries will be held on 30 June and that a closed balloting system will be use to guarantee secrecy of votes. The winner of the presidential nomination for the PLD will be announced on 16 August, according to a report in the Listin Diario. So far, the two leading candidates for the nomination are former President Leonel Fernandez and his own former Vice President Jaime David Fernandez. Jaime David Fernandez had sought the candidacy in the 2000 elections, as Fernandez was constitutionally ineligible to run for re-election, but was defeated in the internal primaries by Danilo Medina, despite his popularity in external polls showing he was a more popular candidate.
