Hipolito vs Martinez Pozo, Round 3

President Hipolito Mejia warned radio journalist Julio Martinez Pozo that he must appear before the justice system regarding his accusation of alleged irregularities concerning the arrival of an armored SUV. President Mejia said that he was well aware of what was being published in the media about alleged corruption in his government and that "no one has the right to say everything they feel like saying". News analysts say that the accusations against Martinez Pozo would not hold up in court because Martinez did not specify any names. Earlier in his government term, President Mejia took former National Planning Office director Rafael Camilo to court on charges of defamation, when the latter challenged the use of the first US$500-million sovereign bond money. While the charge was later rejected in court, the procedure did have a chilling effect on citizens exercising their freedom of expression rights in the Dominican Republic.
