Puello supports multisports constructions

The president of the Dominican Olympic Committee, Jose Joaquin Puello, goes on record in the Listin Diario today saying that the controversial project for the nationwide construction of sports facilities is a good one. "The multisport is a program that is more important than the Pan Am Games because the installations go to the grass roots of the country, where the people have never had anything," he said. Puello also said that the country has satisfactory installations in only 10 cities. Although he expressed that the government should clarify the procedure used to approve the loan for the plans, he enthusiastically approves of the project to build the 115 multisport facilities. The government has yet to disclose where the multisport installations will be built and the vice president of the Senate, Dagoberto Rodriguez Adames, told El Caribe newspaper that the Senate did not receive any plans or details of the locations proposed for the installations. The plans were neither sent to the Chamber of Deputies, which also expeditely approved the bill. A US$61.6-million loan from the All First Bank of the United States, with the support of the EximBank of the US government, has been secured to finance the construction. El Caribe has denounced the loan, which was fast-tracked through Congress, on the grounds that the company awarded the contract lists the home address of the person representing it as its domicile. El Caribe also mentions that no one from the Sports Ministry, the body in charge of supervising the project, has visited the company that won the rights to the project. The company goes by the name Child Safe Products.
