El Caribe newspaper says that preliminary figures from the 2002 National Census show that the free zones and tourism industries have been magnets that have attracted thousands of Dominicans seeking jobs. The provinces of La Altagracia (where Punta Cana and Bavaro are located), La Romana, San Pedro de Macoris (where Juan Dolio and Guayacanes tourism areas are located), Santiago, La Vega, Samana, Puerto Plata and the National District (city of Santo Domingo) employ 127,479 workers, or 76 percent of the grand total employed in free zones. Likewise, 93 percent, or more than 50,000, of the hotel room inventory is located in Santo Domingo and the above listed provinces. An analysis of the census data shows that La Altagracia and San Pedro grew much more rapidly than the capital city of Santo Domingo from 1993 to 2002. The census data also shows that the populations of five provinces — Elias Piña, El Seibo, Salcedo, San Juan de la Maguana and Santiago Rodriguez — have declined or stagnated over the past 20 years.
