The CONEP calls for a meeting

The head of the CONEP has called for a meeting of the commission that will follow-up the Pact for Stability and Economic Development to take place next week. According to El Caribe, the purpose of the meeting, to be convened by Finance Minister Jose Lois Malkun, is to analyze the current situation and its effects on production costs and will be convened by. Viyella said that it is important that the government fulfill the obligations it assumed when the pact was signed last December in order to build confidence in the Dominican economy. ?It is important that we reopen talks on macroeconomic stability,? she said.
Similarly, the head of the National Association of Young Entrepreneurs, Marisol Vicens, said that the President?s speech last Sunday did not fulfill expectations that had been created. Instead, everything was ascribed to external factors, excess private spending and speculation within the currency markets. According to Vicens, the principle factor is the lack of confidence.
In a similar story in the HOY newspaper, Pedro Silverio, head of the Cenantillas economic think-tank, said that the President missed a ?magnificent opportunity to correct his fiscal policies, and he was seen to be trapped by a failed team of economic advisors.? Silverio expressed his skepticism that the measures taken by the President would curtail the devaluation of the peso, since the President ?didn?t touch the core issues of the problem.?
