Circus for the people?

With the Mejia government?s popularity at an all-time low, and the population reeling from a 40-percent depreciation of the peso that has led to major price increases, Attorney General Victor Manuel Cedespedes told Listin Diario that his office will order arrests this week of individuals accused of corruption. Cespedes, who has been on the job since 9 January, plans to prosecute 58 individuals, of which the majority are members of former administrations. Listin Diario features the names of those to be arrested, among them former Industry and Commerce Minister Angel Lockward; former deputy Noe Sterlin Vasquez; the wife of PLD leader Norge Botello, Edna Adolfina Ramirez Ponce de Leon; and her son Manuel Adolfo Amaro. Lockward and Vasquez have a case pending against them for allegedly defrauding the state of RD$200 million through mismanaging the propane gas subsidy program that was in effect from 1 September 2000 to 30 June 2001.
