In a front-page article in the economy section of the Listin Diario, reporter Modesto Rodriguez interviewed leaders of the retail and wholesale sectors and points out that typical articles in the Dominican basket of goods and services have experienced price surges of 8 to 105 percent since January of this year. Rodriguez indicates that there are now severe credit restrictions at the wholesale level, which add to consumer costs. Many companies, in the face of a credit crunch, have suspended the so-called ?venta ranchera?, or door-to-door deliveries, of common staples such as dairy products, sausages, drinking water, soft drinks, and coffee. Only such products as pastas, powdered milk, detergents and hygiene products have not seen steep rises. In a related article in the economy section of El Caribe, the head of the Central Bank said that inflation for the month of January was 3.29 percent, which could translate to well over 36 percent for the year. According to Frank Guerrero Prats, the Consumer Price Index for all of 2002 was 10.5 percent.
