Focus on the beneficiaries of the Plan Renove

Juan Hubieres, the unshaven leader of the Federacion Nacional de Transporte La Nueva Opcion (Fenatrano), denied that he is billing the PRD government for the various strikes his union organized during the PLD government, reports Diario Libre. Fenatrano has undergone a complete turnaround in its position, no longer advocating government policy strikes over fuel increases, as in the past. Fenatrano under the Mejia government benefited from Plan Renove, the multimillion-peso vehicle distribution program paid for by Dominican taxpayers? money. The government imported from its hand-picked vehicle suppliers 5,000 minibuses, as well as other kinds of vehicles, for distribution to select union members. Reportedly, 3,000 of the units have already been assigned. Now, the Central Nacional de Organizaciones del Transporte (Conatra), the second major beneficiary of the plan and another union that was fond of strikes, complains that it has not received its share of units from the plan. Conatra president Antonio Marte says that its organization has only received 1,000 vehicles and that they have 44,000 members. The two unions are in a dispute over the distribution of the minibuses for public transport.
