The public transport route concessions

More violent conflicts involving passengers from southwestern regions of the country traveling to Santo Domingo again put into evidence the irregular and laissez-faire attitude of the authorities when dealing with the unionized transporters that have forcefully taken control of the routes. The government and police have often looked the other way when unions sabotage transporters attempting to offer service on the routes monopolized by Fenatrano union members, despite the fact that the saboteurs are in clear violation of the right to do business in the Dominican Republic. Three buses were set on fire and 24 other vehicles suffered damages from armed bandits from San Cristobal. Juan Hubieres of Fenatrano denounced the police for not having taken action when he first charged that non-unionized drivers were attempting to operate on the routes Fenatrano claims to be theirs. Reportedly, the Fenatrano transporters have impeded any other carrier from picking up passengers headed southwest.
Listin Diario editorialized on the unexplainable granting of these routes by the authorities to the unionized transporters.
