Listin Diario?s Saturday edition, on the occasion of International Women?s Day, reports that 64 percent of students enrolled in Dominican universities are women. According to 2002 statistics from the Ministry of Superior Education (SEESCYT), of the 286,134 enrolled in university programs, 183,749 are women. Even in the case of foreign students enrolled in local universities, women make up the majority. Of 2,340 foreigners enrolled, 52 percent are women.
Nevertheless, Listin Diario mentions statistics from the Labor Force Market Survey presented by the Central Bank in 2000 that report 2,132,278 men and 1,058,233 women. The same study showed there were 62,535 men in managerial positions, compared to 27,469 women. At the professional level, however, the genders evened out with a total of 96,198 professionals, of which 90,791 are women.
