Immigrants hinder fight against poverty

Some newspapers are reporting a new angle of the United Nations Human
Rights Commitee report by independent analyst Anne-Marie Lizin, saying that the presence of illegal Haitians in the Dominican Republic places
a significant burden on the already impoverished population, and slows the process of combating poverty as a result. It concludes that the
international community must not turn its back on Haiti’s problems and leave the Dominican Republic to cope on its own. The report also
highlights the discrimination that Haitians suffer in the DR, many unable to obtain naturalization, despite having lived here for
decades. It praises the new Migration bill currently before Congress.
