Santo Domingo National District Mayor Roberto Salcedo says he will not tolerate ?blackmail? tactics regarding the suspension of operations by ProAseo, the private waste-disposal company contracted to collect and dispose of the city’s domestic refuse. More than 200 collection trucks remain in their depots and the city faces the unpleasant prospect of domestic refuse accumulating in the streets. Diario Libre reports that in some areas of the capital the effects are already being felt as waste piles up. It is estimated that ProAseo and another refuse disposal contractor named Colimec are owed over RD$1 billion by the National District, Santo Domingo West and the central government. Salcedo criticized ProAseo’s ?inefficiency? and committed his administration to ?total refuse collection in the National District?, no matter what action is taken.
