Beware: The Metropolitan Transport Authority (AMET) agents are handing out more tickets these days. One city resident who was stopped for a defective front light complained that the officers were picking on the better cars. Apparently turning a blind eye to the thousands of battered taxi cars in circulation and motorcyclists without helmets, the AMET seems to be targeting those who can actually pay the fines.
So check your car for all its lights, and refrain from holding your mobile phone. Double-check your seat belt, and remove children under 13 from the front seat. Make sure, too, that your driver?s license has not expired. You can renew it at posts located in shopping centers, such as the Multicentro La Sirena, where the process is quick and painless.
El Caribe reports that last week alone the traffic police handed out fines for 2,689 infractions that included seat belts not in use, parking in prohibited areas, and disregarding red lights.
