Hoy newspaper reports President Hip?lito Mej?a’s declarations yesterday that it would be ?inhuman? for the Dominican Republic not to share the resources along the border with Haiti, which has had much of its aid frozen by donor countries and is ?falling to pieces?. The President was referring to the ongoing concerns for Haitians in the frontier regions taking up much of the DR?s social assistance resources, especially in the public hospitals. Reports indicate that 70% of the governmental health budget in those areas goes to Haitians visiting the public emergency wards with cases demanding urgent attention, such as women about to give birth. He criticized the practice of organized begging, where children are sent to beg at traffic lights in the larger towns and cities, and said that the government had been exhorting donor countries such as France, Canada and the USA to stop turning their backs on the problem.
