Child abuse case: 20 years

After a three-month trial under the accusations of sexual misconduct with his two daughters, now ages 21 and 15, Jacobo M?ndez Garc?a was convicted and sentenced to 20 years in prison. Testimony heard during the trial, often very explicit and disturbing, coupled with psychiatric and medical records, allowed Judge Dario G?mez Herrera to apply the sentence based on Law 14-94 and Article 332-2 of the Dominican Penal Code. In another case, an evangelical pastor named Luis Manuel Alcantara was also handed a 20-year sentence last Friday for the abuse of his 10-year-old daughter. According to El Caribe, the man had custody of his daughter and did not allow the mother to visit. It is hoped that the harsh sentences will serve as a deterrent for these types of abuses. There were 141 reported cases of incest in 2002, according to the Child Protection Agency.
