According to the Diario Libre and other papers, President Hip?lito Mej?a is not clear as to whether he will seek a second term of office. Yesterday morning, Mej?a attended a meeting of the PPH, the pro-Mej?a re-election faction within the PRD. The meeting was held the morning before a scheduled afternoon meeting of PRD presidential candidacy hopefuls. A letter was produced, signed by the President and sent to all of the pre-candidates of the party, saying that he (Mej?a) was willing to actively participate in the PRD primary procedures. The ambiguous terms of the letter have thrown the leaders of the party into even more confusion. El Caribe headlines a report that one of the leading representatives for the PPH, Eligio J?quez, says that the movement would register Mej?a as a pre-candidate ?when convenient?.
C?sar S?nchez and Vicente S?nchez Baret, both of whom the same document indicates will represent Mej?a in the discussions leading up to the primaries, delivered the letter to the other PRD leaders during the afternoon meeting at the party headquarters. During the meeting, a 14 September date for the primaries was suggested, pending approval by the National Executive Committee (CEN) of the party.
El Caribe dedicates two full pages (2 and 3) to the speculation of whether Mej?a will or will not try for a second term. Hoy newspaper publishes an interesting article by Pastor M?ndez, whereby the journalist traces 40 denials by Mej?a that he will seek re-election.
