Doctors use rum!

In a report that evokes Juan Luis Guerra’s ?Niagara en Bicicleta? lyrics, Diario Libre reveals that Las Americas International Airport?s medical staff have to make do with rum instead of disinfectant when treating passengers and employees. The eight doctors and twelve nurses who work at the country’s largest airport claim they have not been paid their last salary and that they have to use their own money to buy first-aid supplies, something that causes them embarrassment when treating tourists. In a contradiction of statements by government officials about preparatory measures to monitor and treat suspected SARS cases in airports, the medical staff say that they have received no special facilities or equipment to deal with the situation. However, they say have received instructions from the Public Health Ministry on how to treat a patient exhibiting possible symptoms of SARS, and how to protect themselves from infection.
