The Public Health Ministry is introducing more facilities to deal with suspected cases of SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) as fears intensify following yesterdays warning by the World Health Organization that people should avoid travel to China, Hong Kong and Toronto. Although there has yet to be a single case reported in the Dominican Republic, the fact that the country receives a large number of visitors from Canada is creating some concern. Public Health Minister Jos? Rodriguez Soldevilla announced yesterday that as well as the installations at the main international airports set up to monitor incoming passengers and treat suspected cases, there are a number of specialized isolation units being made ready at hospitals in Santo Domingo, Santiago and Puerto Plata. SARS is characterized by flu-like symptoms and has killed over 250 people worldwide.
