Following complaints from the export sector, the government has reduced the charge per container leaving the country from US$95 to US$20, according to Andres Van Der Horst Alvarez of the National Competitiveness Council. Exporters are opposed to the charge, which is being introduced to cover the cost of using X-ray equipment to examine containers as an anti-drug trafficking measure. These exporters claim that such steps would slow the export process, as well as make it more complicated and costly. The business sector says that X-raying the containers provides no guarantee that the cargo?s entry into the United States will be expedited. They expressed concerns that the surcharge will be merely another revenue producer for the government and the private company that will carry out the service.
