Peynado fights on

Former Vice President and PRSC presidential pre-candidate Jacinto Peynado will continue his fight to have the results of the recent primary elections annulled. Peynado is scheduled to visit the Central Electoral Board (JCE) today, as a follow-up to the formal application he has made to the electoral authorities on the matter. It is believed that he will present further documentary evidence to bolster his claim that the vote of 30 March was fraudulent in some centers. Peynado came a close second to rival candidate Eduardo Estrella, amidst accusations that Estrella’s candidacy had been engineered by PRD activists who favored the re-election ambitions of President Hip?lito Mej?a, and reported voter registration and voting irregularities in some provinces. Jacinto Peynado has denied suggestions that he has been negotiating with other political parties, and has been touring the country lobbying PRSC supporters, who he claims are refraining from supporting Estrella’s presidential campaign. The JCE has not yet officially endorsed Estrella’s candidacy.

On Tuesday, President Hip?lito Mej?a visited Jacinto Peynado at his home. Commenting on the meeting, Peynado said that he reported his version of the problem to the President. But he emphasized that the President?s visit was not to seek harmony, nor to convince him, nor to make political arrangements of any kind. ?We discussed personal and friendly matters,? Peynado said, pointing out that the subject of the economy was not addressed.
