Zona Colonial buildings under scrutiny

The List?n Diario focuses on Santo Domingo’s colonial zone, reporting that many historic buildings there are in “legal limbo”. The Oficina Nacional de Patrimonio Municipal (ONPM), as the body responsible for preserving the country’s monuments, is currently struggling to establish the status of houses and buildings, and to determine their ownership. Only 14 buildings in the Zona Colonial enjoy protected status, but ONPM is seeking to register as many as 40. This process has been hindered by slow purchasing processes, in some cases because the government has not yet paid the vendors in full for the transfer of their properties to ONPM. There is also serious concern about the 23 buildings believed to be in extremely poor conditions, and which house over 200 families. The ONPM, along with state housing agency INVI, plans to relocate the families affected, but so far no definite agreement has been reached.
