Hot on the heels of the success of Malec?n Libre, Santo Domingo’s municipal authorities are looking at tackling the problems in Mirador Sur park, the capital’s most popular green area. Hundreds of people exercise in the park on a daily basis, but parking facilities are limited. This creates traffic congestion that affects residents of the adjacent Avenida Anacaona and surrounding areas. The park is jointly managed by the municipality and the Ministry of Environment. Diario Libre quotes Jos? Miguel Mart?nez, who leads the municipal environmental management unit, as saying that work to improve facilities will begin in the coming weeks. The plan is to organize a program of sports, culture and art similar to that of “Malec?n Libre”, by which the capital’s seafront avenue, the Malec?n, is closed to traffic from noon to midnight every Sunday.
