“Bad News”

The other morning papers are mixed in their reactions to the government’s takeover of the List?n Diario newspaper and the approximately 70 other Baninter-owned media. El Caribe is largely supportive, saying that the situation is a legal consequence of the Baninter collapse and has nothing to do with the freedom of the press. Diario Libre labels it as ?bad news? and reminds readers of the List?n’s support for the PLD presidential candidate in the 2000 elections, Danilo Medina. Columnist Emilio Lapayesse, who also appears on RNN as a commentator and writes in Hoy today, is fiercely critical of the government, a sentiment expressed in more measured tones in the newspaper’s main editorial column, which calls for a swift resolution of what it calls an anomaly in the situation of the intervened media.
