Baninter case should be made an example

Civil society organization Participaci?n Ciudadana has called for the Baninter case, which it described as one of the world?s biggest financial scandals, to be made an example of. The organization, which acts as an electoral observer and campaigns for democracy and transparency, says that this is an opportunity to end the complicity between private and public interests once and for all. ?The complicity is so wide-ranging that many fear that once again impunity will rule,? said the hard-hitting statement from Participaci?n Ciudadana?s central committee. If the authorities do not get to the bottom of the matter and punish those found guilty, corruption will continue to run rampant, they warn. Participaci?n Ciudadana called for all Baninter assets to be sold so that Dominican society could be compensated for the huge burden imposed by the bank?s collapse ? calculated at two-thirds of the state budget for 2003, or one-third of GDP. The process, however, could take as long as an estimated 15 years.
