The morning papers are touting President Hip?lito Mej?a?s official visit to Washington DC, where he met with President George W. Bush and other high ranking members of the US leadership, as a success. They praise the President?s achievements, which include obtaining promises for financial aid for the country in the wake of the Baninter collapse, an agreement with the Inter-American Development Bank (IADB), progress on legalizing the status of undocumented Dominicans in the US and parity with the Central American nations on trading conditions. Hoy congratulates the President for his achievements while pointing out that the results may not be felt in the short term. Diario Libre praises the President?s “pragmatism”, and List?n?s columnist C?sar Duvernay describes the visit as productive.
It is also reported that the President invited his US counterpart to the Pan American games, which are due to be held in the DR this August. Bush apparently thanked Mej?a for the invitation and promised to consider it.
