OMSA on a thread

Di?genes Castillo, director of Santo Domingo?s metropolitan transport system (OMSA), has warned that the company could collapse unless the government honors its subsidies urgently. Castillo says that the OMSA has received less than a quarter of its budget allocation, and so has had to cut down drastically on bus services in recent weeks, as well as to increase their fares by RD$2. According to Castillo, the recent devaluation of the peso has doubled the company?s costs. If the government pays up, he said bus fares would go back down to RD$3. News reports indicate that the increase has worked against the service?s finances, because many users have transferred to the newer Conatra and Fenatrado union service buses that also charge RD$5.
