Lack of confidence is main problem

The president of the Federation of Industrial Associations (FAI), Ignacio M?ndez commented on the uncertainty that affects the Dominican economy, as reported in El Caribe. ?The panorama is not in anyway clear, and no one knows where the ball will go,? he said. M?ndez feels at the bottom of it all is a lack of confidence, which he feels will be difficult to restore. The political debates within the government party, and the opposition that is revving up for the 2004 presidential election, only worsen the financial uncertainty, and the outcome is difficult to predict, he feels. He told El Caribe that if the economic dynamics continue as at present, annual growth would be null or insignificant by year?s end.
?Everything will depend on what the United States does with the World Bank or the IADB. Securing assistance would be the first solution to restore confidence,? he said.
