Hoy newspaper reports that an unnamed PRSC deputy proposed to Congress yesterday a modification to the Constitution that would add two more years to the term of the President elected on 16 May 2004. At present, the Constitution establishes a Dominican presidential term of four years. The argument being used for the amendment is the high cost of organizing elections, with RD$500 million having been requested by the JCE to organize the process for 2004. The idea behind the change would be to synchronize municipal, congressional and presidential elections, by pegging two more years to the term of the President elected next year. Only last year, Congress reformed the legislation to restore the possibility of consecutive re-election.
