Cardinal criticizes monument

Cardinal Nicol?s de Jes?s L?pez Rodriguez criticized the controversial Constanza monument that honors Trujillo?s militia for putting down an attempt to overthrow the regime, saying that his family were victims of Trujillo and that there is little to be grateful to the dictator for. The commemorative statue, dedicated to ?those Dominicans who fell in the line of duty? was constructed by the Armed Forces in Portezuelo, Constanza ? just a stone?s throw away from another monument ? one that honors those who fought against Trujillo and is known as the Monument to the Heroes of Constanza, Maim?n and Estero Hondo. On 14 June 1959, an expedition made up primarily of Dominicans, but which also included Cubans, Venezuelans, and Puerto Ricans, landed in the area to fight to overthrow of the despotic regime.
