Eduardo D?az, president of the Fundaci?n H?roes del 30 de Mayo, urged President Hip?lito Mej?a to order the monument erected in Constanza on 11 April by the Ministry of Armed Forces be torn down. The monument pays tribute to the military that fought off Dominican civilians seeking to overthrow the Trujillo regime in 1959. D?az said that no one had the right to authorize such a monument ? not even the President of the Republic.
During an event held to commemorate the 42nd anniversary of the assassination of the dictator, D?az lamented the birth of a new cult worship of the tyrannical leader.
Porfirio Rodriguez, of the Fundacion Testimonio, wondered aloud if Dominicans have become morally anesthetized by the numerous scandals that have come to light over the years. He also condemned the monument and warned of an emerging cult to defend Trujillo and his dictatorship.
El Caribe today carries the opinion of Trujillo biographer, Bernard Diederich, on the monument. ?I cannot believe that a monument to the soldiers of Constanza would be made ? It is frightful, and goes beyond all understanding.?
