Government to sell Intercontinental Insurance

In news articles and paid announcements in several of today?s papers, the government has declared its intention to sell one of the parts of the Baninter Group, Intercontinental de Seguros, the insurance company. The Superintendent of Insurance Rafael Santos said the sale would protect the resources of the company. Santos published Resolution 004-2004 and revoked the authorization to operate the company. The resolution establishes the Superintendent of Insurance as the liquidator, in order to ?protect the insurance reserves for individual life insurance, the payment of claims, the rights of insured persons in general and to guarantee the fulfillment of obligations.? At the same time, the resolution also prohibits the company from executing any sales or signing any new policies. The resolution also maintains that the negative consequences resulting from the Baninter collapse have affected the credibility of the company to such a degree that it could no longer operate. Intercontinental de Seguros began its operations in 1975 and was the third largest insurance company in the Dominican Republic.
